Early Work: The Rhondda Valleys, South Wales 1961-1962

Right from the beginning the reason for my interest in the arts was simple - I just enjoyed trying to capture the strength and beauty of where my family and I lived, the coal mining community of the Rhondda Valleys. Initially, it was the coalminers, my father, friends: then came the immediate environment and the valleys themselves. Eventually, other landscapes were to become important, but they always had strong visual and emotional links with the mountains and valleys where I had grown up.
